Can I make Waffle Cones?

I promise that working in a customer service job is never boring. Well I actually take that back, working in a customer service job can be boring but there are those few customers that come in and make your night. Yesterday we had two of those incidents happen. So Last Night I was charged with being the Waffle Cone Whisperer which technically would be ok but I wasn’t feeling very good when I started my shift. See everyone’s been passing around this new virus. Two of our coworkers currently have it and even though we all do our best to keep away from the sick coworkers I also know that in a small space that it is nearly impossible to prevent yourself from getting sick.

So knowing this I stationed myself where I needed to be and got to work on cranking out as many waffle cones and bowls as I could. As the night progressed I got a little bit better and so the night was going by a little bit faster. Not only that but the storm that was rolling in was giving me time to focus on the job at hand and not stop too many times to help with customers.

After I finished the first batch of waffle cone mix I took a break and started making a new batch. This customer comes into the store and walks right up to the ice cream counter. He leans his arms against the case and I can feel his eyes on me. Im trying to focus on the task at hand so I proceed to ignore him. A minute ticks by and I hear him say something. I turn and look at him.

"Can I make waffle cones?" I’m not gonna lie I was a bit confused. One of our coworkers that was helping to serve his group glanced at me and I continued to go on with what I was doing but I also responded.

"Unfortunately you cannot sir" I got the waffle cone mix out and started to weigh it out on the scale.

"Does it help that I am a food certified handler?" I laughed a little (mostly to myself) and shook my head.

"No sir it does not" and he frowned. I turned back around and went on my business proceeding to ignore him as I went to make the rest of the mix. I heard him say something to my coworker and he responded with some line that included "she’s focused".

Later we all talked about it and had a good laugh. Especially considering I turned him down immediately. I had a job to do and we don’t have another waffle cone maker till the weekend. So of course I have to get us ready.

The night rolls around, the storm has arrived and its drizzling outside. All of us are talking and having a good time when these two women come into the store. We stop our conversation and go to work and make sure to serve them. I turn from my waffle cone makers and see this women walk the entire length of the ice cream bar and then shout out to us,

"Is this ice cream?"

I looked at my coworker who took a moment to respond. once she collected herself she smiled and said "yes mam it is". The lady seeming to be confused looked at the ice cream, glanced at us and proceeded to leave. I promise you that you would know if we served ice cream before you even entered the store and if you didn’t have any idea we did serve ice cream, for whatever reason, there is a HUGE sign above the ice cream bar that reads ICE CREAM. It’s not very difficult to see and we don’t hide what we serve.

We all had a pretty good laugh about that and I honestly don’t know what she was expecting. Yogurt? Fairy Dust? I have no idea.

Sometimes customers surprise me. Other times they entertain me. If I get lucky they will do both.
