Dreads

So recently I went and got dreads. Yes Dreads. Those of you that don’t know what they are im gonna explain a little. Dreads are a type of style of hair. Basically you section off areas on your hair, and knot up that section until its nice and round. Usually this is performed with a crochet hook, a dread comb, and depending on the preference, some hair product to lock the hair in place. I’ve had dreads before and I loved them but at that time I didn’t have anybody who could help me tighten them and keep them in good shape. After two years with them I took them out and went back to having my normal straight hair.

I will say that it didn’t last long. Within four months I was back at it and got two dreads put in my hair. I have this new hair stylist (technically a Barber) who has a whole head of dreads. Her dreads are beautiful and I was so amazed by them. Seeing her every day made me so excited and I knew that I was going to get them again. So I went to her and she did the dreads for me. Really it was a trial to see how my hair would lock up when you just knotted it and then used rubber bands to keep it in place. After about three months they were completely locked up, but I couldn’t afford to go back and get more due to my losing my job at that time. Fast forward to the present and I had decided to go ahead and get more dreads in my hair. I honestly really missed them and I trust my new Stylist. Her technic works and she will help me maintain them. She’s even teaching me new tricks to help me lock them up at home.

Just recently I got asked why I chose to "do that" to my hair by one of my coworkers. I remember thinking of a really mean answer in my head but I thought about it and answered honestly to him.

"Well, truth be told this is my second time having them and I was really sad when I had to take my old ones out...but I couldn’t maintain them on my own and nobody would help me to maintain them. Now I have someone who is willing to help me out and actually knows how to make it happen." He was silent for a minute but seemed to be ok with the answer. Usually I get comments about how dirty my hair must be or how I must not shower enough. Truth be told that is just a stereotype. I wash my hair every other day...really I have to or it gets really gross and oily. I just make sure to not use conditioner on my dreads and most of the time they lock up in about two to three weeks. For other people it depends on their hair.

I will say that I am so glad that I decided to get them again, Its less hair to manage and I think that it fits my personality perfectly.

What do you think about dreads?
