Sarah, this is easy. My educated guess and experience with men tells me he finds you attractive. He wouldn't waste his time asking someone to smile who he finds unattractive. Why would he care? He's probably thinking, "This girl is really attractive. She would be more attractive if she smiled more." Or maybe he wants you to find him attractive, too. If you're not smiling then maybe you don't find him attractive. Just curious, aside from his "rudeness" did you find him attractive? I understand how you felt, however. Asking someone to smile doesn't help their mood and make them want to smile.
