Renting Lesson for NZ

I have never rented anything before in my life. Growing up they never tell you about what renting something means or how to really do that. Especially when it comes to renting in other countries. They never teach you all the things you probably want to know as an adult but tell you about all the stuff that "may one day help you" in your adult life. I honestly would have preferred the teachings of how to do taxes or what taxes really mean over some math problem that I won’t remember a year after I get out of school.

A lot of the things I have learned as an adult have been from either 1: the harsh lessons or 2: my father stepping in and helping me to understand it completely and fully before I do anything or make any decisions. I honestly prefer choice 2 over the first one considering that the harsh lessons are something I would have loved to avoid at all costs. Unfortunately in life that isn’t how most things work. Sometimes you do have to learn the harsh and worst of ways to grow up and know for the next time around.

For New Zealand I made the decision to go ahead and rent a camper. This way I have choices to where I can go and when I go there. To me it sounds much more relaxing and adventurous. Of course I am expecting it to also be challenging nad a little stressful but that is totally ok. It wouldn’t be a full trip without some challenges along the way.

So I had to have my dad walk through the whole process of renting this camper. I only knew that it was going to be expensive and I knew that I needed some expert to help me since I had no idea what it all entailed. Turns out that insurance is a thing and just because you have insurance for your vehicle in the U.S doesn’t mean it helps in a whole other country. Of course I didn’t know this and was given the options of what kind of insurance's I could get to cover the vehicle. With that the price went up and I was upset at the time because I am one of those money people who looks for all the ways I can get things cheaper. If I can save money I will.

Now when I look back I realize why it was recommended and why it is something I will need. I may not be happy about the price and neither is my wallet but it is better than me wrecking and not having anything.

Lessons are learned one way or another. This one I was fortunate enough to learn from my parent figure. What lessons have you learned from traveling in another country?
