I've never heard a pop that loud before. He went for the top of the wall while he was doing a route and just barely missed it by the edge of his fingers. Next thing we all knew he fell and a loud scream was heard seconds later. Immediately I was by his side as well as a few other people who were around. D has managed to twist his ankle when he came down from the wall and not in a good way either. He had his foot turned to a 90 degree angle and with that the pop was heard throughout the gym. It took him a while before he got out of the fetal position and once he did they took off his shoe, applied some ice and wrapped his foot. From there he was then helped to the couch where his foot was elevated and we sat around waiting to see what the outcome of his foot would be.
After five minutes the adrenaline had left and he was given some ibuprofen for the pain which was returning quite quickly. Let me say that D is very stubborn so when we were sitting there trying to think of what to do he was trying to tell me that I could go climb and take my time. But with the way his foot has popped and where it was swelling I knew that waiting was probably a bad idea. So with some advice from a few friends of ours we decided to go to a medical center that was three miles away.
With some talking and thought we decided to head there right away. With the help of a few friends at the gym we got D into the car and I drove him to the medical center were we filled out the paperwork and waited for his turn to arrive. The worst case scenario was that the foot was broken and the best case scenario was that it was just really badly sprained. I kept my fingers and toes crossed while we waited to be called into the back. It took them about half an hour to get his paperwork through. Because he couldn't use one of his feet they brought out a wheelchair that he was not happy about but took it anyway.
Once we got into the back room we waited for them to be ready to take him in for an x-ray. While we waited the nurse came in and chatted with us to ask him what happened, what he was allergic to, if he took any meds, and etc. The nurse then looked at his foot and was saw how swollen it was and from the description of what happened im sure that she thought it was broken. She was really helpful and once she got everything she needed she left us for a bit to consult with the doctor who then came in and wheeled him away.
Not to long later they brought him back and told me that the foot isn't broken just severely sprained which was the best case scenario. Even though he can't do any big activities for up to two weeks it's better then not being able to use it for six months and having to wear a boot. His dad insurance covered his medical bill so he left without having to pay anything which is always a good thing.
So now we wait and see how long it takes for him to recover. Hopefully it gets better in the appropriate time and he won't have to go back in for another X-Ray but only time will tell.
