Oh work. Work work work. The one thing that is always good about working at a ice cream shop is the entertainment. So I have a nice little story for you guys today.
Here goes.
Lately we have been having a lot of fog in our area. It’s been going on for a little over a week and honestly I don’t mind it. It gives the place a new feeling and I enjoy it being overcast since that lessens the amount of sun we have. To me its perfection. So of course I go through my normal routine and as I am on my way to the store I am getting myself ready for the day. I knew that it was going to be a slow day and that it was going to be a longer shift. In honestly I didn’t want to go but you have to do what you got to do to earn money.
I get to work, clock in and go to my station. For the first hour its dead. Basically my coworker and I are standing around doing nothing. In the end I started watching a video to help me with my other job. Every time a customer would come in I would pause the video and attend to the customer. Once they were out the store I would go back to the video I was watching. This went on for about an hour. Then this couple walks in. She makes a beeline for the ice cream bar. My college then says something about a free sample and she turns around and goes to him. It takes her a second but she comes back and I wait for her to be ready to order.
She looks at me, looks at the menu and looks at the options. Her face becomes contorted.
"Um so what’s the price of the waffle cone?"
"Our prices are right on this menu here mam" I point to the menus that we have and she stands back and squints. It takes her a few minutes and then says "So the price of the waffle cone is where?"
Instantly I have to concentrate to NOT roll my eyes. You have to be kidding. The sign isnt hard to understand.
"Mam it should be on this side" She takes her time and looks at the options.
"I’m confused"
Now let me tell you that I worked for a full ten minutes with this women and I thought that I was going to lose it. Confused as to why she was confused I make my way over to the kitchen and lean over the line that we have to keep the customers out of the kitchen. I point it exactly out to her and she takes in a deep exhale. "Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"
I go back to my station. She takes a moment and asks if she can get a double scoop on a cake cone. I start scooping her ice cream and she suddenly asks another question. "Can I Have a little bit more chocolate on the top? Just a little?" I stop scooping and look directly at her. My patience is snapping. "Mam, If you want more ice cream I have to charge you for a third scoop?"
"And how much is that going to cost me?" Luckily my college was standing at a register and rung it up. He replies "$9.34" he then proceeds to give me the look. I take that little hint of agitation and look at the lady. She tells me to go ahead and do the two scoops and add a little on top of that. I proceed.
Once I get to two scoops I stop and look at this lady at the counter. I ask her to clarify if she wanted just a little ice cream or the full scoop. She gives me this glare and asks if it is going to cost more. I tell her what we have already said "yes it will still cost the two dollars mam" She sighs and goes "Oh well hell then do the whole scoop"
Yall I have never seen someone get three scoops on a cake cone. Ever. She gave me this crazy look when I handed it to her and she even commented to herself on needing a bowl. I didn’t offer her one. I was done and wanted her gone and out the store. As she walks away my college checks her out and quickly dismisses her. I don’t know how I handled it but I can tell you that people that pull that kind of stuff really stick with me. Of course that means more entertainment for you guys. For me it’s just another annoying thing about working with the general public.
Oh and just wait, I got a few more for you all to read.
