Kids and Glass

Have you ever gotten glass stuck in your toe? Maybe a nail? Or it could be just a splinter. In any case, if you have gotten something stuck in your toes or in the general area of the foot then I sympathize with you. When I was a kid I had a lot of neighborhood friends. Most of them were right across the street and we all used to go to each other’s houses and have sleepovers and jump in each other’s pools. It was fun when we all got together. We knew what we all liked and we were by ourselves most of the time. Our parents all knew each other so they didn’t bother hanging around too much. AS long as we communicated on who’s house we were going to then we were considered safe.

Well one year my neighborhood friend Michaela had accidently let one of our squirt guns go flying while swinging it and guess what it did? It broke one of our back porch windows. Luckily the squirt gun didn’t go throw the doubled window and went through only the outside glass. In any case it took us forever to get the back area cleared of glass and even to this day it still sits there all broken since the window company who made the glass is out of business and nobody else can match the tint. Needless to say we were crazy kids.

One day we had decided to have a pool party at my house. After all it was finally cleared of being dangerous and we were having a blast. All the stupid made up games we played got us into quite a few disputes and for this one we were roughhousing. It was fun and we were all laughing just letting our crazy kid selves go until I felt a stab. It didn’t feel very good but it didn’t raise alarm at first. I tried my best to ignore whatever it was and quite frankly I didn’t want to stop the game. I thought it might make my friends upset so we kept going. A few minutes later I put my foot down and felt the stab intensify. I stopped the game immediately and told my friends to keep going. I was gonna step out for a second and check my foot since I felt that it was hurting. They obliged and I got out and took a seat. Lifting my foot I was expecting to have a scratch or maybe see a splinter. Something that was minor and I could handle.

I lifted my foot and saw...blood but no injury. It seemed normal for the most part. Confused I touched my big toe and felt something slice me on the inside. The tricky part was seeing what I was looking at. It seemed to blend right in and I honestly wasn’t sure what to do. It was awkward and my friends were concerned about the blood. I pressed down and found the slit. It was humungous and blood was pouring out. IN the middle of it all was a shiny object and that object was a huge chunk of glass laughing at me and my pain. My friends got out of the pool and left. I hobbled to my dad’s door and got his attention. Quickly He got a towel and led me to the bathroom. With quick examination he saw the glass piece. I had two options. I could let him pull out the piece of glass with tweezers or I could go to the ER which neither of us wanted to do. I don’t like doctors so I opted for option one.

I won’t lie there was blood everywhere. I have never seen so much blood, it looked like a murder scene. It took some time and I really thought it would never stop. We had to put peroxide on it and I couldn’t walk on my feet correctly for a week. It hurt to put pressure but I managed somehow. I honestly think he was surprised that I managed to do that to myself but then again I am his kid.

If you ever get an injury like that and can’t tell what has happened go seek someone else’s eyes and have them help you out. You could cause more injury to yourself or infection so please be careful. I got lucky with my dad being there and being as calm as he was. I still have my big toe and that is always a plus.
